Tonatoe, Cherokee purple - This Tennessee heirloom tomato is thought to have originated in the Cherokee territories. Very productive vines bear lots of dark purple fruit with red brick interiors. The tomatoes are pleasantly sweet and rich. They are thin-skinned and soft. They do not store well, so strictly a fresh market or home grower type, but well worth the fuss.
